1. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
The Copperbelt University is a Public University established through an Act of Parliament No. 19 of 1987, and it is situated in the hub of the Copperbelt region of Zambia. The University’s core business is Teaching, Research, Innovation, Industrialisation and Consultancy (Education 5.0) as a service to the nation. It has nine teaching schools, a Graduate School, an Institute and five Directorates with a total staff strength of 910 employees, out of whom 6 are Principal Officers, 429 are academic staff and 458 are administrative/support staff. The University has a student population of thirteen thousand (13,000) spread over seven campuses across the country.
2. POSITION OF VICE CHANCELLOR
The Council of the Copperbelt University through the Search Committee wishes to invite applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Vice-Chancellor.
2.1 Job Purpose:Â Â The Vice-Chancellor reports to the University Council (hereinafter called Council) and is responsible for provision of Strategic Leadership in academic, administrative and financial management of the institution in attaining its mandate of Education 5.0.
The duties of the Vice-Chancellor include the following:
2.1.1 To ensure implementation of the 2021- 2024 University Strategic Plan, with its objectives of Growth of scholarship (staff training and teaching); Research, Innovation, and Industrialization; infrastructure development; spread and expansion of University activities, internal quality control and assurance systems and processes; income generation and resource mobilization; and growth and management of Alumni.
2.1.2 To ensure the development and implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan  beyond 2024, which will provide for forward looking objectives and policies.
2.1.3 To provide effective, visionary and strategic leadership of high standard to the University for the pursuit of learning, research, and for the acquisition of liberal, professional, science and technical education, which is responsive to the needs of the Zambian industry.
2.1.4 To ensure that the University recruits and retains sufficient numbers and high calibre of academic, administrative and general staff on competitive terms and conditions of service as determined by the Council.
2.1.5 To Develop and embed a high performance culture that defines ambitious goals and priorities leading to robust operational plans and higher accountability.
2.1.6 To control and direct operations of functional heads involving academic, administration, finance, internal audit and corporate affairs.
2.1.7 To formulate and recommend policies to Council, ensure Council meetings are held as planned and implement Council decisions.
2.1.8 To preside over all meetings of the Senate and ensure that the latter makes regular reports to the Council regarding the performance of its functions.
2.1.9 To inform Council of the state of the University on a quarterly basis and submit yearly financial reports to all relevant bodies, as required by the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013.
2.1.10 To preside over all Ceremonial Assemblies of the University in the absence of the Chancellor.
2.1.11 To foster high value linkages with all stakeholders, especially Government, local communities, Cooperating Partners, the Private Sector and Alumni.
2.1.12 To ensure financial sustainability and maximize efficient use of resources available to the University through fund raising and innovative management.
2.1.13 To promote Corporate Governance practices that support the attainment of the vision, mission, core values and goals of the University.
2.1.14 To ensure the University is responsive to the changing role of technology in education and research.
2.1.15 To contribute to public service and intellectual life of the community in general.
2.1.16 To develop and implement the University’s Risk Management Framework.
2.2 QUALIFICATIONSÂ AND EXPERIENCE
2.2.1 In possession of an earned doctorate or equivalent professional qualification from a recognized university.
2.2.2 An accomplished researcher, teacher and publisher and should have at least ten (10) years of experience at senior management level.
2.2.3 Track record of developing and leading diverse teams, managing through influence and implementing strategic change.
2.2.4 Strong understanding of current and emerging global trends in Higher education.
2.2.5Â Experience in the corporate world at senior management level will be an added advantage.
2.3 ATTRIBUTES
2.3.1 Visionary leadership with a mature disposition and high professional integrity.
2.3.1Â Excellent communication, change management, and interpersonal skills. A self-assertive team player with demonstrated analytical, administrative and financial management abilities.
2.3.2 Organisationally sensitive with a genuine interest in people at all levels and a firm understanding of a research intensive academic environment.
2.4 Â Â Â TENURE
The Vice-Chancellor is appointed for an initial period of five (5) years which is renewable for a similar period depending on performance.
