This role will be required to carry out switching operations, analyse and rectify system abnormalities and attend to any call outs in the shortest possible time to provide reliable and efficient electricity supply to the consumers who are the main stay of the Zambian economy.

The job holder will be reporting to the Engineer – Field Operations

Key Accountabilities
  • To carry out all programmed and forced outages switching operations safely and according to established procedures.
  • To mitigate all inadvertent trip outs during switching operation.
  • Testing of equipment during switching to uphold safety and regulation philosophies.
  • To analyse faulty conditions by reading relays correctly, reporting correct indications to the Control Office and carrying out appropriate action.
  • Highlight any dysfunctionalities for corrective measures.
  • Carry out fault finding on substation DC and 380 volt and protective gear circuits and arrange for repair of defective ones.
  • Ensure that substation drawings and electrical wiring diagrams are accurate, up to date, readily available and in good condition to facilitate relevant engineering work.
  • To check energy meters and ensure that they are operating correctly by seeing and reading the meters for billing purposes and that the customers are getting the right supplies.
  • Carry out monthly and ad hoc meter readings for billing purposes.
  • Carry out circuit reliability tests to check the integrity of the relays and protective gear to guarantee the protection and security of the network and personnel.
  • Conduct substation checks to ensure that all work and operations are in accordance with CEC System regulations and any other that might be deemed relevant.
  • To test run all standby apparatus/equipment so that they are in good working order for use in emergency situations.
  • To ensure drawings are well secured in the substation.
  • Ensure that warning notices, danger labels and all mandatory signs are displayed correctly and in enough numbers.
  • Report any unsafe conditions to relevant personnel.
  • Conduct training for employees/consumers on high voltage switching and training employees to become responsible and senior responsible.
  • Ensure that all company resources under the section are used solely for company purposes and that there is no misuse of assets such as tools, materials etc.
To be Successful in this role, you will be required to have:
  • Minimum: Advanced Certificate in Power Electrical.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in power system operation and safety, and ability to conduct trainings.
  • Member of Engineering Institute of Zambia.
  • In-depth understanding of load flow and system risks associated with systems operations.
  • Vast experience in switching and safety with minimum of 5 years.
  • In-depth knowledge of power Load flows.
  • Good presentation skills using constructive and logical approaches.
  • Good writing and interpersonal skills.
