Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL)

Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) The Company was incorporated in 1982 and is mandated under the Railways Act of 1984 to operate both rail passenger and freight trams. ZRL’s main operations domain is Mulobezi to Chililabombwe, and Chipata to Mchinji covering almost 1,200km. The Company also provides train operations beyond its borders, through the respective railway administrations and connects to nearly all the ports in the SADC region. The company’s connectivity is increasing as more rail networks are planned to connect through the Zambia Railways Limited rail network. The company is inviting applications from strategic, visionary and focused Zambian nationals to lead the organisation into a dynamic and technologically advanced rail transportation hub in the region for the following positions.

1.0 MANAGING DIRECTOR

The Managing Director reports to the ZRL Board Chairperson and is answerable to the Board of Directors for the broad responsibilities of the implementation of the Corporation’s statutory mandates, strategic goals and the management of its resources. Innovation and Operations

  • Determine the possible need for redesign, renewal or refurbishment of the organization’s physical assets and advise the Board.
  • Determine appropriate technical systems and processes for the organization in line with technological advances and international best practiced Zambian laws and advise the Board
  • Ensure that the railway network as well as a sufficient number of vehicles running on the network are in good working condition and optimally deployed
Corporate Strategy and Policy Formulation
  • Interpret the Company’s Vision and Mission to work towards achievement of set goals.
  • Ensure ZRI embarks on growth path to profitability and positive operating cash flows
  • Oversee the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures across all business units to ensure consistency and quality assurance in all business activities.
  • Ensure that policy is well understood and complied with by all members of the staff and stakeholders.
People Management and Leadership
  • Ensure that a proper Performance Management System is in place and is effectively applied at all levels so that individual KPIs are aligned with Company goals and objectives.
  • Ensure that competent leadership and operational systems are in place, to drive and foster change across all business aspects of ZRL.
  • Provide inspirational leadership, with minimum Board supervision, to all employees, ensuring that they actively participate, contribute to the strategic thinking and the development of ZRL
  • Instill a level of discipline in Senior management to responsibility for their decisions and actions take accountability and
  • Ensure understanding and compliance to relevant Company, Policies regulations and applicable laws.
  • Ensure health, safety and wellness initiatives are supported and that relevant policies are understood, followed and implemented by all employees
Financial Management
  • Provide credible and pro-active leadership in ensuring achievement of Financial Goals and KPIs in line with the approved Corporate Plan and budgets
  • Keep the financial position of ZRL consistently under review to ensure that there is an appropriate balance of long-term and short-term finance, and that adequate cash flow is available for day-to-day business activities resulting in a return on investment to the shareholder
  • Provide leadership in development of Operational and Capital Expenditure Budgets each year and ensure presentation of the same to the Board of Directors and eventual upproval.
  • Reporting against budget quarterly to the Board of Directors, explaining any variations and devised actions to correct the situation if budgets targets have not been met Ensure relevant reporting standards are followed in Financial reporting.

  • Excellent Numerical and computer skills. Someone with demonstrable exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills who can motivate and inspire the rest of the workforce
  • Team player whose influence should generate trust but must also enforce existing systems to value add to the growth of the company.
  • Ability to keep up-to-date with legislative and policy changes
  • Ability to translate raw information into actionable strategies and initiatives Effective communication skills and report writing and presentation skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Full grade 12 certificate (5 “D’ levels) with at least five credits
  • Bachelors degree in any of the following disciplines: Engineering, Information Technology. Transport and Logistics. Finance, Business Administration or relevant qualification from a recognized Institution,
  • Masters degree in any of the following disciplines: Engineering, Business Administration/Management, Transport, Logistics, Marketing, Strategic Management, Law or relevent social and physical sciences from a recognized Institution; and/or professional qualification such ACCA, ACA or equivalent
  • At least fifteen years work experience with twelve years at senior management level in a reputable organization Membership of a relevant professional body
Terms of Offer:

An attractive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and responsibilities of the position will be negotiated with the right candidates.
