International School of Lusaka
The International School of Lusaka is one of the oldest and largest international schools in Africa. Reports to: Head of School
Overview
Reporting directly to the Head of School (HoS), the Facilities Manager (Fam) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and purposeful operation of school facilities. The FM should aim to give International School of Lusaka (ISL) the best run facilities in the city.
Areas of Responsibility
The Facilities Manager is responsible for all matters related to the operation of school facilities, excluding educational programmes and areas under the aegis of specific departments, such as finance. This essentially means running the school’s physical infrastructure and managing the associated staff, both employees and subcontractors, with emphasis on Safety and Security: Maintenance; Facilities Development, Budgeting and Compliance
Safety and Security
- Safety: Supports the development and manages the school safety plan, disaster preparation, fire drills student, staff and public safety, and student health services in conjunction with the School Nurse
- Security: Liaises with subcontracted security service providers to ensure people and property at ISL are safe and secure. This includes developing processes that are effective without being intrusive.
- Vehicles: Oversees the school’s vehicles (and any subcontracted vehicles) to ensure that they are safe, clean, and functional at all times and that school vehicles are used efficiently.
- Technology: Oversee specialist staff to ensure that these function reliably and efficiently.
Maintenance
- Maintenance: Inspecting, planning and ensuring that all facilities and school grounds are safe, well maintained, and functional at all times. This includes managing school maintenance staff and, where necessary, supervising subcontractors.
- Custodial: Liaises with subcontracted custodial service providers to ensure that ISL facilities exhibit the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and attractiveness
- Landscaping: Liaises with subcontracted landscaping service providers to ensure that ISL facilities exhibit the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and attractiveness highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and attractiveness
- Vehicles: Oversees the school’s vehicles (and any subcontracted vehicles) to ensure that they are safe, clean, and functional at all times and that school vehicles are used efficiently.
Facilities Development
- Resources: Uses school resources efficiently to minimise costs and where possible raises revenue against school assets, by renting facilities or unused properties or hosting events at school.
- Development: In collaboration with the Hos, plans and executes improvements to facilities and processes that cement ISL’s position as the leading school in the city, including completely new initiatives.
- Contributes towards Budgeting and Financial Planning
Compliance - Ensures that ISL is compliant with all relevant regulatory health, safety and other requirements
Required Qualifications
The candidate will be an accomplished professional, which will be reflected by educational achievement, career advancement, success in business or all of these. In particular, highly experienced manager with the following attributes will be advantageous:
- Bachelor’s Degree in business management, education or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
- Able to promote a company culture that encourages top performance and commitment to quality
- Oral and written communication skills in English and a local language
- Experience in a similar position in a private school or a business of similar size and complexity
- Experience managing a team
- Ability to use technology effectively for communication and organisation
- Skilled in budgeting and financial planning
- Demonstrated organisational and analytical skills
Contract: This position will be from 1 to 2 years’ consensual contract that may be renewed at the discretion of the school management.
