ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES
The role is responsible for providing strategic and tactical internal and external communications solutions that contribute to the company objectives and adds value to the business. The role encompasses several key activities, including communication strategies & planning, thought leadership, tactical execution of internal and external communications plans and activities, as well as business support and change management.
What You Will Be Accountable For
Regulatory / Fiscal Affairs
- Focus on Shaping our ambition of a Better Tomorrow by delivering Regulatory Must Wins for New category Products, drive aspects of Harm Reduction in liaison with the scientific affairs team and area Campaigns team
- To contribute to sustainability at an end market level by shaping the business environment through the planning and execution of campaigns designed to deliver the preferred regulatory future.
- In liaison with the area teams, proactively Manage all Fiscal, Excise, illicit trade issues to ensure business sustainability and license to operate.
- To contribute to the achievement of business objectives by ensuring regulatory impact mitigation on a cross functional basis and identifying opportunities in the development of the regulatory environment
- To drive and manage the continuous development of BAT’s regulatory engagement with a view to promoting evidence based regulations.
- To engage with the BAT Board ensuring that they understand the regulatory environment, issues and can support initiatives undertaken by the company.
Business Communication & Sustainability
- In Liaison with the area team develop a comprehensive and coordinated internal communication strategy and plan that supports business information needs and priorities.
- Manage the communication cycle plan and delivery of internal communication activities to support key business initiatives.
- Evaluate internal communication initiatives against objectives and identify areas to be improved.
- Proactive media engagement, amplification and thought leadership (EVP, THR, ESG to shape positive public perception of BAT.
- Lead and execute BAT’s sustainability agenda, ensuring our ESG footprint is aligned to A Better Tomorrow vision.
- Collaborate with East and Southern Africa Markets to ensure consistent messaging across all Communication Outlets
- Delivery of Annual Reports aligned to our strategic narrative in Zambia
- Enhanced sustainability reporting in Zambia.
Essential Experience, Skills And Knowledge
Education / Qualifications / Experience Required
- Graduate with 5-6 years of experiences in a senior role in Public, External Affairs or Legal environment
- Experience with working with Business Member Organisations, Regulators, Policy Makers and Government ministries and with existing networks
- Good general knowledge and understanding of the key drivers of illicit trade in the market, (e.g. how taxation affects the dynamics),the provisions of the FCTC relating to illicit trade, the key existing laws and regulations which can affect or limit illicit trade in any particular market, key measures used to combat illicit trade.
- Plays a key role supporting the business on excise matters, is able to explain and build understanding in the business of different excise scenarios. Actively monitors the external environment for excise developments and keeps the business informed. Provides strong back office support (analysis, position papers,) for excise engagement
- Experience in External Campaigns Management – Desirable

Functional Skills Required
- A good understanding of the External Environment, Regulators
- Established relationship with Key Government ministries, Regulators, Policy Makers, Business Member Organisations and ability to connect and shape emerging issues at short notice
- A good understanding of the sensitivities and complexities involved in the tobacco industry.
- Ability to articulate the regulatory and fiscal risks and proactively react to them
- Ability to work in a Cross Functional and above market team in a matrix organisation
