We have projects in Zambia, Kenya, Uganda and Mozambique. The company owns and operates a 105 MW thermal power plant in Ndola, Zambia. In 2019, a 24 MW Solar Power Plant was launched in Kabulasoke, Uganda.
Job Purpose:
The overall purpose of the Business Development Manager – Power Business is to spearhead development of a portfolio of utility-scale energy projects through the formation and execution of market strategy, coordinating the efforts of a multidisciplinary team of experts to produce clear guidance for our pool of project developers and continually track and evaluate their progress. The Business Development Manager will win and deliver Power and Energy projects in and across Africa. The successful candidate will grow existing client relationships and support the identification and development of new clients for GLAE from our Nairobi, Lusaka, Kinshasa or Maputo office in the Power BU. They will strengthen the relationships between GLAE and major stakeholders such as the Ministries of Energy and other relevant government institutions in the Central African Mining Belt. This includes the ability to identify the company’s untapped potentials and be able to develop unique selling propositions for the company. It also includes networking, pitching and convincing potential clients to do business with the company, pursuing and prospecting to close on specific pipeline projects of interest for the company within the Southern Africa Region
Key Responsibilities:
Technical (40%):
- Power Generation industry expertise and experience including hydropower, Combustion Turbine and or Reciprocating Engine, and Renewable Energy projects including solar, wind and energy storage projects
- Power Delivery systems including Transmission, Distribution, Substation, Land Acquisition and Field Service projects
- Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) projects
- Program Management Office (PMO) engagements, including asset management, data analytics, program controls and reporting.
- Associated studies, technical advisory, and construction services support
- Achieve new and add-on business with existing clients by developing and enhancing key client relationships and serving as one of the primary company contacts
- Provide leadership in the development of client relationships, capture planning, strategy, pursuit and proposal activities
- Participates in project scoping and costing and proposal preparation, interviews, and negotiations to the extent required
- Travel as required
Business Development (40%):
- Define long term organizational business strategic goals, build customer relationships with existing clients, identify new business opportunities, negotiate, and close business deals and maintain extensive knowledge of current market conditions.
- Participate in business development and identify opportunities in which the company can explore
- Carry out extensive market survey, mapping and provide detailed report on trends
- Responsible to increase sales opportunities and maximize revenue for the organization
- Identify potential new customers, nurture them, and ultimately convert them into clients, and continue to grow the portfolio
- Participate in pricing, quotations for clients and prospects as well as being familiar with policies and regulations in industries of interest to the company’s business
- Develop marketing strategies that will market and promote GLAE activities
- Assess and build effective customer and industry partner relationships
- Develop growth strategies within the existing and new customer organizations for energy and power markets
- Develop strategies that will enable the company to win proposals
- Present to and consult with senior level management on business trends, potentials, pipeline, targets and forecast
Liaison & Compliance (10%):
- Ensure clear understanding of all GLAE projects that are in the pipeline and are pending government approval and or tenders have been awarded and require to be moved to the next level of implementation with government agencies.
- Ensure communication between GLAE and government officials involved in the various phases of the different projects is documented with the understanding of how that impacts the other entities of contact
- Develop trust with and build networks that will support the documentation process of projects
- Identifying and establishing potential partnerships between GLAE and quasi government companies
- Collect, analyze, and utilize data and feedback to identify opportunities to improve the relationship between the GLAE and government and/or quasi government entities
- Ensure Full compliance with Country Laws and other regulatory requirements governing projects, sales, supplies, distribution, human resources and administration. Working in collaboration with all relevant internal business leaders including Legal, Operations and People and Culture.
- Full compliance with JCG’s Business Principles, Policies, processes and Standards.
Relationship & People Management (10%):
- Maintain close working relationships with key internal stakeholder; Commercial, Legal, People and Culture Risk, Marketing, Operations etc.
- Provide leadership/support in country and ensure the right culture and motivation is maintained across all level to facilitate delivery of country objectives and exceed customer expectations.
- Build, Manage and Maintain relationships with key External stakeholders to facilitate business objectives
Knowledge; Skills and Experience required for this Role
- University Degree in Business Development / Marketing /Commerce /Engineering or related field.
- Master’s Degree advantageous.
- At least 10 years demonstrated experience in the Energy/ Oil & Gas/ Services / Power and related Industry
- Knowledge in Energy and Power Project Developments, Commercial & Operations Management across Africa and Copperbelt regions
- Experience working in/with Electric utilities, PPA negotiations, power generation technologies for baseload and renewables
