Job role

Brood stock Improvement & Fry Collection Superintendent is a key leadership role in aquaculture operations, responsible for overseeing the entire lifecycle of breeding and fry production. This position involves managing the health and performance of brood stock, leading genetic improvement programs, and ensuring efficient collection and management of fry. The superintendent plays a crucial role in maintaining high productivity, genetic diversity, and sustainable growth at Yalelo.

Key Responsibilities:

Broodstock Selection and Management:

  • Ensure the selection of high-quality broodstock based on genetic traits, health status, and growth performance.
  • Develop and maintain breeding schedules to produce consistent batches of fry or fingerlings.
  • Implement culling practices to remove substandard or underperforming broodstock.

Genetic Improvement:

  • Oversee genetic improvement programs to enhance desirable traits in offspring, such as growth rate, disease resistance, and feed conversion efficiency.
  • Monitor and track genetic diversity within the broodstock population to prevent inbreeding and maintain genetic health.
  • Analyze breeding outcomes, growth performance, and fry health to adjust breeding strategies and enhance genetic lines.

Fry Collection and Management:

  • Fry Collection: Supervise the collection of eggs and fry after spawning. Ensure proper handling to maximize survival rates during incubation and rearing.
  • Quality Control: Implement strict quality control processes to ensure that only high-quality, healthy fry are stocked or sold.
  • Fry Development: Monitor the growth and health of fry during the early stages to ensure high survival and performance as they transition to grow-out ponds.

Facility and Operational Oversight:

  • Hatchery and Pond Management: Ensure that all breeding, hatching, and fry collection facilities operate efficiently and maintain optimal environmental conditions (e.g., water quality, temperature, oxygen levels).
  • Biosecurity Protocols: Enforce biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks and maintain the health of broodstock and fry populations.

Record Keeping and Data Management:

  • Detailed Reporting: Maintain accurate records of breeding schedules, broodstock performance, genetic data, and fry production results.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: Use data analytics to guide decisions related to genetic selection, health management, and operational adjustments.

Team Leadership and Training:

  • Supervision of Hatchery Staff: Lead and train the team responsible for broodstock care, genetic selection, and fry collection. Ensure staff are skilled in handling delicate breeding processes and following operational protocols.
  • Staff Development: Provide ongoing training on the latest broodstock management, genetic improvement techniques, and fry handling best practices.
