Position reports to:                            S3 CONVEYING SUPERVISOR

Purpose

This position requires incumbent to be proficient in all vulcanizing, mechanical splicing and hot and cold repair of conveyor belts. Incumbent will be proficient in removing and installing of conveyor belts prior to splicing. Incumbent will be able to perform all steps required to vulcanize a splice belt and to be able to train other members of the team. The position requires a high level of skills and requires belt splicer to always have a positive and respectful attitude. The belt splicer must have appropriate levels of safety skills and mindset to drive and maintain safety at work at all time.

Key Responsibilities

The specific tasks to be performed by the position holder will include;

  • Promote safety by adhering to company safety guidelines, which includes but is not limited to the proper use and safe handling of tools, equipment and materials and use of personal protective gear.
  • Know, understand and be capable of utilizing emergency response protocol
  • Enforce compliance with work order attachments and documents such as JSA’s, Work procedures, SWI’s, etc.
  • Be a self-starter and able to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to work place safety and the safety of fellow employees.
  • Responding quickly to breakdowns to minimise downtime
  • Operating belt splicing and installation equipment
  • General Conveyor maintenance and inspection on conveyor belts and associated components.
  • Ability to measure the required counterweight slack as per splicing procedure.
  • To carry out new conveyor belt installation and conveyor belt change out.
  • Determine material needs and cut material prior to work to minimise waste.
  • To carry out cold and hot repairs on conveyor belt.
  • To carry out lagging of pulleys onsite and in workshop.
  • Must be able to multi task, meet deadlines, and work independently and in a team environment
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing, in a clear, effective and professional manner.
  • Able to trouble shoot the cause of failures to the conveyor belt and pulley lagging
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental management systems, policies and procedures, along with ensuring that all risks have been identified, managed and safe working environment is maintained.
  • Enforce good housekeeping practices are maintained by enforcing cleaning up before, during and after every task and not leaving any hazards within the work place.
  • Follow laid down policies and procedures as out lined by management.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of grade 12 certificate
  • Experience in different types of conveyor belt splicing and Rubber lining
  • Conveyor belt splicing certification will be advantageous.
  • Incumbent will be required to attend any belting school if FQML sees necessary
  • A valid driving license will be of great help
  • Sound knowledge of the usage of mechanical and electrical hand tools.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in steel cord and fabric belt splicing, finger splicing will be of great help.
  • Experience in pulley lagging and other rubber lining works.
  • Experience in working in heights.
  • Experience in working on mechanical components associated to conveyors.
