BBC Media Action is the BBC ‘s international development charity
BBC Media Action, Zambia is seeking a mentor to support 4 journalists from media partners to produce content around climate change.
Consultancy duration: up to 10 days.
Section A – Background
BBC Media Action, Zambia is currently implementing a project which aims to improve the capacity of media partners to produce compelling stories on climate change. As part of this initiative, we want to train and mentor 4 selected journalists from the partner stations to develop and produce investigative pieces on issues impacting climate. Topics could range from mining to deforestation, to unsustainable farming practices.
Section B – Mentorship aims
Journalists working on these stories with our media partners would benefit from mentorship from an experienced journalist who could support them in producing good quality pieces. We are looking for a journalist with expertise in covering climate stories who can guide them through the entire process — from story development and research to analysis, and production, including strategies for effective storytelling and social media content. The output of the training includes 4 audio and visual pieces on issues affecting climate. One in-person meeting with the selected journalists is planned at the beginning of the consultancy to discuss the stories and their development and plan the production and remote mentorship follow-up.
Section C – Profile of mentor:
Mentors applying for this call will need to:

  1. Have recent experience in producing news content for both traditional and digital platforms around climate change.
  2. Have a solid experience in investigative reporting.
  3. Have previous experience in delivering on-the-job training and mentorship.

– A cover letter of maximum 2 pages specifying 1) how your experience meets the “profile of mentor” in section C listing the news stories produced, broadcast and published on multiple platforms and 2) the proposed mentorship programme outline with the number of days required to complete the mentorship programme as per section B.

– A financial proposal including daily rate (if not BBC staff)
