Job Purpose

The Responsibilities of this role will include but not limited to the following:

  • Ensure occupational health, safety and environmental plans and procedures are developed, implemented and complied with in line with Mopani, ISO and OHSAS standards as well as internationally recognised principles;
  • Implement, maintain and report on the use and effectiveness of safety, environment and occupational hygiene systems and recommend corrective actions where required;
  • Lead a culture of reporting hazards, incidents and near miss events and ensure they are appropriately investigated and actioned to prevent recurrence;
  • Conduct statistical analyses and track and disseminate information to all operation levels in understandable graphs, indicators and figures to enhance HSE understanding of all operational employees;
  • Track critical control compliance monitoring and implement systems to ensure compliance verification is conducted;
  • Design and refine the existing Safety, Environmental and Occupational Hygiene Management systems at Mopani and verify and enhance emergency response capability;
  • Understand current and planned operational changes and work with the General Managers to factor in safety resource planning around the work and enable support systems for implementation of initiatives;
  • Ensure effective cost control systems are in place with reference to operating and capital expenditure as well as resource utilization in order to maintain costs within the approved budget;
  • Develop, implement, maintain and report on systems for monitoring work performance of the HSE Department;
  • Develop, mentor, coach HSE staff and support their personal training and development programmes to ensure continued availability of skills and effectively ensure succession planning.
To be considered for this position, the candidate should meet the following minimum requirements:
  • Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent HSE field.
  • 10 years of experience in a senior Occupational Health, Safety and Environment role in a large mining operation.
  • Extensive exposure to Environmental practices and methodologies and systems.
  • Must have mining and shaft experience and be conversant in mining and metallurgical operations.
  • Exposure to managing contractors’ HSE performance on operating sites particularly underground operations.
  • Computer literate in the Microsoft Office applications.

The successful candidate must be result oriented and have the ability to work with own initiative, ability to understand scope of work, paying particular attention to Company policies and Corporate objectives.
